Thalassemia Support Group

In collaboration with Thalassemia Support Group members started helping Thalassemic patients by arranging required groups of blood. Contacting doctors, social workers and stakeholders to start a support group was the ultimate option. Fortunately, he received an enthusiastic response from the community, leading to the formation of a strong 'Parbhani Thalassemia Support Group (PTSG)'. (unique id- MH22/2021/0296638 & Reg No.MH/05/2018(PBN)F:17099. On 8th May 2016 Parbhani got an opportunity to celebrate the first World Thalassemia Day. The expansion work started with the first major program of the institute. District Magistrate and Collector Shri Rahul Ranjan Mahiwal, Civil Surgeon Dr Javeed Athar and Dr Jayant Indurkar Hematologist Aurangabad and social activists and many other dignitaries from all walks of life graced the inauguration. The year 2019 saw a lot of progress in the activities of the Thalassemia Support Group. HLA TYPING, a test that identifies a suitable match for bone marrow transplantation in siblings, has been widely undertaken. Many registered for the trial. Of those that arrived, more than 200 were typed, with results varying between poor to very strong. About 33% of all siblings were found to exhibit a 10x10 match. This is a pioneering effort not only in this district but also in the state. Participants had come for HLA screening from four different Indian states, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra, thus the first time the Thalassemia Support Group had contact with another state. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has been signed with Thalassemia Support Group and Datri International Foundation, Chennai, Histogenetics Lab, New York, USA and Sankalp India Foundation, Bangalore. We are working in close cooperation with Them. Especially Kokilaben Hospital Mumbai, Dinanath Mangeshkar Hospital Pune Bhagwan Mahaviradas Jain Hospital Bangalore helped us successfully complete BMT of the child at a low cost. Till date Over 50 children of the state have successfully undergone Bonmaro Transplant, an expensive and complicated surgery, at Mumbai, Vellore, Pune, Vellore, Pune, with the initiative of Thalassemia Support Group, by giving confidence to the parents, getting all the financial support and providing free detailed guidance, and those children are now living a Thalassemia free life.

27 bone marrow matched children will undergo bone marrow transplant in near future who have undergone free pre-bone marrow transplant check-ups and are currently undergoing free treatment in Bangalore, Hyderabad and Parbhani Day care centers.
